Background of the Study
Yoruba oral narratives have long served as a vital medium for transmitting cultural values, history, and social norms in Nigeria. These narratives are distinguished by their unique syntactic structures, which are deeply embedded in cultural traditions. The use of proverbs, parallelism, and rhythmic sentence constructions are hallmarks of Yoruba storytelling (Chinwe, 2023). This study examines how cultural traditions shape the syntax of Yoruba oral narratives. By analyzing recorded storytelling sessions and transcriptions, the research highlights the interplay between traditional narrative forms and linguistic structure. The study explores how syntactic choices not only enhance the aesthetic quality of the narratives but also serve as mnemonic devices that facilitate the retention of communal wisdom. Furthermore, it investigates the impact of modern influences on these traditional structures, considering how contemporary language practices may be altering longstanding syntactic conventions (Olu, 2024; Adebayo, 2025). The findings contribute to the broader field of sociolinguistics by illustrating the dynamic relationship between language and culture in Yoruba communities.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the rich syntactic heritage evident in Yoruba oral narratives, systematic research on how cultural traditions influence their syntax remains limited. The unique syntactic constructions of these narratives risk being eroded by modern linguistic influences, potentially leading to a loss of cultural identity (Chinwe, 2023). Without a clear understanding of the traditional syntactic frameworks, efforts to preserve and revitalize these narratives are hindered. This study addresses the need for a comprehensive analysis of the interplay between cultural tradition and syntactic structure, thereby contributing to the documentation and preservation of Yoruba oral literature (Olu, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To document the syntactic structures characteristic of Yoruba oral narratives.
To analyze the influence of cultural traditions on these structures.
To evaluate the impact of modern influences on traditional syntax.
Research Questions
What syntactic features define Yoruba oral narratives?
How do cultural traditions shape these syntactic patterns?
What changes are observed in the syntax of modern Yoruba narratives?
Significance of the Study
This study deepens our understanding of the relationship between culture and syntax in Yoruba oral narratives. Its findings will aid in the preservation of traditional storytelling methods and inform cultural and linguistic revitalization efforts (Chinwe, 2023; Olu, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses solely on Yoruba oral narratives and does not extend to other ethnic groups or written forms of literature.
